Analysis of Cyber Attack Themes through the Film ‘Leave the World Behind’

Öz

Rapidly developing technology reaches dizzying levels and adds new features to this speed every day. The spread of the Internet to the world facilitates communication on both individual and country basis and offers access to almost everything desired. While these opportunities make life easier on the one hand, they also bring risk factors. It is not always possible to use the channels used during communication in a controlled manner. At this point, individuals or groups with different objectives may aim to neutralise the target that they think poses a danger to them by using all digital means through virtual means with the motive of attack. Both in the past years and today, individuals or states can both capture information and weaken or even neutralise some of the powers of the target, which they see as an enemy, by making attacks in line with their own interests. The targeted areas can be seen under many headings, especially economic, political and military. It is possible to say that such attacks will continue to increase with the advancing technology. Since cyber incidents in the digital world directly affect the future of countries, their independence and social life, it is important to address them as a problem in different areas. Therefore, such events are covered on different platforms and are also the subject of films in the field of cinema. In this context, the film Leave the World Behind (Leave the World Behind, 2023, Sam Esmail), which was released on Netflix, was discussed in this study since it is a film that has attracted attention in recent years about cyber-attacks. The film depicts the helplessness of living beings in the face of the negative developments experienced with the placement of current technological possibilities at the centre of our lives and the transformation of this situation into a struggle for survival In the study, in which textual content analysis method was used, the ways in which the cyber-attacks in the film were made, the effects on the society and the results of these effects were analysed.

Siber Saldırı Temalarının ‘Leave the World Behind’ Filmi Üzerinden Analizi

Öz

Hızlı gelişen teknoloji, baş döndürücü seviyelere gelerek bu hızına her geçen gün yeni özellikler eklemektedir. İnternetin dünyaya yayılması hem bireysel hem ülkeler bazında iletişimi kolaylaştırmakta, istenilen hemen her şeye erişim imkânı sunmaktadır. Bu imkânlar bir taraftan hayatı kolaylaştırırken bir taraftan da risk faktörlerini beraberinde getirmektedir. İletişim sürecinde kullanılan kanalları kontrollü kullanmak her zaman mümkün olmamaktadır. Bu noktada, amacı farklı olan kişi ya da gruplar, tüm dijital imkânları kullanarak kendilerine tehlike yarattığını düşündüğü hedefi saldırı güdüsüyle sanal yollardan etkisiz hale getirmeyi amaçlayabilmektedir. Gerek geçmiş yıllarda gerekse günümüzde kişisel anlamda ya da ulusal boyutta ülkeler, kendi çıkarları doğrultusunda saldırılarda bulunarak hem bilgileri ele geçirmekte hem de düşman gördüğü hedefin sahip olduğu birtakım güçleri zayıflatabilmekte hatta etkisiz hale getirebilmektedir. Hedeflenen alanlar ekonomik, siyasi, askeri başta olmak üzere birçok başlıkta görülebilmektedir. Bu tür saldırıların ilerleyen teknolojiyle birlikte artarak devam edeceğini söylemek mümkündür. Dijital dünyada yaşanan siber olaylar, ülkelerin geleceğini, bağımsızlıklarını ve toplumsal hayatı direkt etkilediğinden farklı alanlarda bir sorun olarak ele alınması da önem arz etmektedir. Dolayısıyla bu tarz olaylar farklı platformlarda işlenmekle birlikte sinema alanında da filmlere konu olmaktadır. Bu bağlamda Netflix’te yayınlanan Leave the World Behind (Dünyayı Ardında Bırak, 2023, Sam Esmail) filmi, siber saldırılar konusunda son zamanlarda dikkat çeken bir film olduğundan bu çalışmada ele alınmıştır. Film, mevcut teknolojik imkânların hayatımızın merkezine yerleşmesiyle birlikte yaşanan olumsuz gelişmeler karşısında canlıların çaresiz kalmasını ve bu durumun hayatta kalma mücadelesine dönüşmesini anlatmaktadır. Metinsel içerik analiz yönteminin kullanıldığı çalışmada, filmde yaşanan siber saldırıların hangi yollarla yapıldığı, toplum üzerinde yarattığı etkiler ve bu etkilerin sonuçlarına yönelik analiz yapılmıştır.
