On-the-job training was implemented with the regulations and incentives of the central government in tourism higher education. Despite the increasing importance of on-the-job training, there are limited studies on the expectations of tourism academicians and on-the-job training. The purpose of this study is to determine the expectations and perceptions of tourism academicians about the practice of on-the-job training. In this direction, questions were asked through an interview method among 17 tourism academicians affiliated with the universities. The data were collected from the participants by telephone and face-to-face interviews with the help of a semi-structured interview forms. The academicians state that there are university and sectorbased deficiencies, and that sectoral-academical cooperation should make necessary changes for ‘on-the job training’ in the course of syllabus restruction. Besides, it is important to determine the potential businesses in the industry and to perform business-student matching with the most suitable qualities. Academics also perceive full-time expert staff as a deficiency to manage relationships with businesses where students work as interships. In general, academicians consider on-the-job training as an application that introduces the industry to the students and creates added value.
