Aim: Violence is all kinds of attitudes and behaviors such as physical, sexual, psychological, verbal or economic, including arbitrary obstruction of freedom or threat and oppression, which result in or may result in individual's physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm or suffering. Raising awareness is of importance in preventing violence. The media, which affects every segment of society and all age groups, have a role in teaching and sustaining violence and in maintaining the indifference to violence. However, when used effectively and correctly, the media can also be used to prevent violence. The public spots are one of the media tools used in this context. This research was conducted to determine the impact of the "stop violence" public spots on the students' awareness towards the types of violence, the negative effects of violence on people, and things to do when faced with violence.
Method: A total of 354 students, studying at different departments of the Atatürk University, was included in the study. Informative, 2 min short videos were created on the negative effects of physical, psychological, economic and sexual violence on people, and the things to be done when faced with violence. All public spots were watched in sequence to the students who were enrolled in the research. Students were asked to mark the level of awareness on a 5-point numerical scale for each public spot they watched. The data were collected by face-to-face interviews with the students. Number and percentile values and independent groups t test were used in the analysis of the data obtained. Ethical principles were adhered at all stages of the study.
Results: According to the students, the average raising-awareness scores of the public spots were 3.48±1.18 in the physical violence public spot, 3.70±1.16 in psychological violence public spot, 4.08±1.01 in economic violence public spot, and 3.98±1.14 in sexual violence public spot. According to the comparison based on gender, awareness scores of female students were significantly higher for all types of violence.
Conclusion: In the study, it was found that the "Stop Violence" public spots raises awareness of physical, psychological, economic and sexual violence in students. It can be said that public spots are important tools to raise cognizance of the masses, raise awareness and prevent violence.
