Beekeeping Potential in Kars Province and Use Of This Potential

Abstract

Situated on the north of Turkey and serving as a passage between Caucasia and Anatolia, Kars has large part of its territory on the plateau that has the same name as Kars with an altitude ranging from 1500 to 2000 m and mostly covered with volcanic materials. Kars has a continental climate which is very harsh due to its altitude, continentality and other natural conditions and can significantly differ between short distances. As a result of its location, Kars has mostly herbaceous community of Alpine, a member of Iran-Turan flora, and floral cover of forestland, particularly scots pines adapted to characteristics of the land, providing the basic input for beekeeping activities in the province.

Kars is substantially under control of natural conditions, particularly climatic conditions, and beekeeping activities mainly consist of migratory beekeeping due to climatic parameters that can differ between short distances. Because of insufficient knowledge, other types of stock farming that are more compatible with natural conditions, and higher contribution to human life, beekeeping activities are the secondary source of living for the residents of Kars and the primary source of living for the migratory beekeepers from outside the province.

If the bee breeding is totally based on the natural conditions of Kars, the product quantity and output per beehive is low, varying from year to year despite product quality being satisfactory. While the average honey production per beehive is 5.8 kg Kars wide, it is 14.05 kg in average Turkey wide. While total honey production is approximately 68 tons Kars wide, it is approximately 89.000 tons Turkey wide. Kars supplies 0.8 % of Turkish honey production.
