The Effects of Edentulism on Nutritional Habits and Body Weight

Yıl 2013, Cilt: 23 Sayı: 3, 399 - 407, 01.03.2013

Öz

Partial or total edentulism is a frequent health problem at advanced age groups. Edentulism negatively affects the aesthetics, psychology and social life of the individuals. It also decreases their quality of life, and influences nutritional habits by causing deficiency at masticator functions. The diet of the toothless individuals usually includes softer and more processed foods, and the foods needed less chewing. These foods generally contain high amount of oil and cholesterol. When these are thought together that the intensive consumption of such kind of foods, and aged’s, generally, inactive living conditions, may be caused weight gain. This review aims to evaluate the effect of partial or total edentulism on body weight in light of the current reports.
