Effect of Ethyl Methanesulfonate Treatment at Different Duration and Concentration on Germination and Seedling Growth Characters in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the different duration of ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagen in wheat (kırik variety) germination and seedling growth [control (10 minutes), 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours] and concentrations [0 (control), 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% mM] effects and the optimum EMS dose to be used in breeding programs. The experiment was carried out in 4 replicates according to the factorial arrangement in the completely randomized experimental plan. According to the data obtained, it has been observed that as the application time of EMS extends, it causes a general decrease in germination related characters; shoot length was found to be higher in 3-hour application, root dry weight and shoot dry weight in 6-hour application compared to control; When the concentrations are evaluated according to their averages, the root length is 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3%; It was observed that root dry weight and shoot dry weight were higher at 0.3% concentrations compared to the control. The effect of both the application time and concentration of EMS on many characters of the seedling examined was very important. In this study, EMS applied at different times and concentrations positively affected many characters and thus increased compared to control. For this reason, LD50 value could not be determined according to the time and concentrations applied in the research.
