The Effect of Nitrogen on Yield and Quality of Sugar Beet (Beta vulgaris L.) in Drip Irrigation
ABSTRACT: This study was carried out to determine the effect of nitrogen rates applied by drip irrigation on the yield and the quality of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) on the experimental fields of Sugar Institute in Ankara, Turkey between 2009 and 2010. The experiments were planned as randomized block design with 4 replicates. Five nitrogen rates (100, 130, 160, 190 and 210 kg N ha-1 were applied by drip irrigation. According to the results of the research, the highest root yield was obtained at 160 and 190 kg ha-1 nitrogen rates in 2009 as 74.35 and 78.39 t ha-1, respectively. In 2010, the highest root yield (92.42 t ha-1) was obtained from the levels of 190 kg ha-1 nitrogen applied by drip irrigation. The highest sugar content was obtained from the lowest rates of N (100 kg ha-1) application in 2009 and 2010 as 17.99% and 14.24%, respectively. As the highest white sugar yield was obtained from the level of 160 and 190 kg ha-1 nitrogen applications in 2009, it was obtained from the levels of 100, 130 and 190 kg N ha-1 in 2010. According to the results, the level of 190 kg N ha-1 applications of nitrogen may give the most favorable results for sugar beet in drip irrigation system.
