An Effective Tool for Poverty Alleviation, Self-esteem and National Development: Social Studies Education

Öz

One of the most serious problems facing humanity is poverty. Global economic recessions force every society or country to think seriously and develop new strategies to survive. Turkey, within the framework of the strategies it has developed, should use Social Studies education in the right way for both national and economic liberation. This study assesses the role of Social Studies Education in promoting poverty reduction/elimination in Turkey. It also highlights the concept, nature and scope of Social Studies and discusses some of the objectives of Social Studies for poverty alleviation. The paper goes on to identify some of the objectives of poverty alleviation and job creation programmes, discusses how Social Studies education supports poverty alleviation and makes some recommendations.

Yoksulluğun Azaltılması, Özgüven ve Ulusal Kalkınma İçin Etkili Bir Araç: Sosyal Bilgiler Eğitimi

Öz

İnsanlığın karşı karşıya kaldığı en ciddi sorunlardan biri yoksulluktur. Küresel ekonomik durgunluklar her toplum ya da ülkeyi ciddi olarak düşünmeye ve var olabilmek için yeni stratejiler geliştirmeye itmektedir. Türkiye de geliştirdiği stratejiler çerçevesinde Sosyal Bilgiler eğitimini hem ulusal hem de ekonomik kurtuluş için doğru bir şekilde kullanmalıdır. Bu çalışma, Sosyal Bilgiler Eğitiminin Türkiye’de yoksulluğun azaltılması/ortadan kaldırılmasını teşvik etmede oynadığı rolü değerlendirmektedir. Ayrıca çalışma Sosyal Bilgiler kavramını, doğasını ve kapsamını vurgulamanın yanında yoksulluğun azaltılmasına yönelik Sosyal Bilgilerin bazı hedeflerini tartışmaya açmaktadır. Çalışma, yoksulluğun azaltılması ve iş yaratma programlarının bazı hedeflerini tanımlamaya devam ederek Sosyal Bilgiler eğitiminin yoksulluğun azaltılmasını nasıl desteklediğini ele almakta ve bazı önerilerde bulunulmaktadır.
