Issues of Preservation and Display in Archaeological Site Museums

Abstract

This study aims to highlights that the Museums in Algeria have evolved significantly in their roles and functions, shaped by changing objectives, diverse collections, and advancements in science and technology. Initially focused on collecting and preserving archaeological treasures, museums faced challenges that led to damage in collections, prompting the need for scientific and technical interventions to enhance restoration and preservation methods. This shift aimed to proactively protect artifacts by creating suitable preservation and display environments, tailored to the nature of each collection—organic or inorganic—and addressing damaging factors. In Algeria, the challenge is more pronounced, as many national museums are repurposed archaeological sites not originally designed for this purpose, and even colonial-era museums fall short of modern standards. This complicates efforts to provide adequate preservation and display conditions. The research focuses on the Museum of Ornamentation, Miniatures, and Calligraphy, an Ottoman-era site converted into a museum housing deteriorating organic art pieces. The study analyzes the museum's preservation environment, identifies damaging factors, and explores the challenges faced by staff. It underscores the importance of strict preservation measures to safeguard collections and ensure their longevity for future generations.
