Media Literacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Öz

Artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally transforming the ways in which media is produced, distributed, and consumed, necessitating a critical re-examination of the concept of media literacy. This conceptual study explores the evolving definitions, dimensions, and emerging challenges of media literacy within AI-driven media environments. Adopting a qualitative conceptual research design, the study synthesizes literature from media studies, communication, education, and digital culture by reviewing relevant academic journals, books, and scholarly databases. The analysis demonstrates that while traditional media literacy frameworks have emphasized accessing, analyzing, evaluating, and creating media messages to support democratic participation and informed citizenship, they are no longer sufficient to address the complexities introduced by artificial intelligence. Algorithmic content curation, personalized recommendation systems, generative AI, deepfakes, automated decision-making, and large-scale data collection have fundamentally reshaped the contemporary media ecosystem, requiring users to develop new critical competencies. The findings suggest that contemporary media literacy should incorporate algorithmic literacy, AI literacy, data literacy, ethical awareness, and socio-technical understanding in order to enable individuals to critically evaluate both media content and the computational systems that shape information flows. Existing media literacy frameworks only partially address these emerging competencies, leaving individuals increasingly vulnerable to misinformation, manipulation, algorithmic bias, and opaque automated systems. Accordingly, this study argues for an expanded conceptualization of media literacy that reflects the realities of AI-mediated communication and supports ethical, critical, and informed participation in digital society.
