From Streets to Streams: The Historical Evolution of Turkish Rap in Four Waves

Öz

Turkish rap has emerged as one of the youngest and most influential genres in contemporary Turkish popular music. Its transformation from an underground subculture into a mainstream musical genre has profoundly reshaped its themes, lyrical content, cultural practices, and artistic styles. Despite its growing cultural and commercial significance, this historical transformation has received limited scholarly attention, particularly from a wave-based perspective. Addressing this gap, the present study employs qualitative content analysis based on multiple data sources, including 42 academic articles, 27 interviews, 3 book chapters, 5 newspaper articles, and 3 documentaries. The findings identify four major waves in the historical evolution of Turkish rap: the emergence of politically charged diaspora rap in Germany (1984–1999), the rise of Türkiye-based underground rap (2000–2009), the diversification and digital expansion of the genre (2010–2016), and the mainstream popularization and commercialization of Turkish rap following the rise of trap and drill (2017–2025). By proposing the first comprehensive wave-based historical model of Turkish rap, this study contributes to the literature by providing a systematic interpretation of the genre's cultural, musical, and ideological transformation.
