The History of Solidarity of Azerbaijanis Around the World

Öz

December 31, the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis, represents a key milestone in the formation of a shared national identity among Azerbaijanis living across different regions of the world. More than a symbolic date, it reflects the dynamic interaction between historical memory, collective consciousness, and transnational belonging. Its origins can be traced to the events of December 1989 along the Araz River, where the symbolic removal of borders signaled a broader aspiration for unity, self-determination, and the overcoming of historical fragmentation. The official recognition of this day in 1991, initiated by Heydar Aliyev, transformed these developments into an institutional framework, contributing to the consolidation of national identity and the articulation of Azerbaijanism as a cohesive ideological concept. Within this context, the Day of Solidarity functions not only as a commemorative occasion but also as a unifying reference point that reinforces collective belonging. From an analytical standpoint, the persistence of solidarity among Azerbaijanis across diverse geographical settings highlights the role of shared language, cultural continuity, and historical experience in sustaining identity beyond territorial boundaries. Accordingly, the Day of Solidarity embodies both symbolic meaning and practical relevance in strengthening diaspora cohesion and ensuring the continuity of national identity.
