The Norman Invasion of the North African Coasts in the Middle Ages

Öz

This study examines the Norman expansion along the North African coasts during the medieval period and analyzes the role of the Hammadid and Almohad naval forces in confronting Norman maritime influence in the western Mediterranean. The research focuses on the political and military conditions that facilitated Norman intervention in the Maghreb, particularly during the decline of regional powers and the fragmentation of authority in Ifriqiya. It also explores the strategic importance of the Hammadid fleet in supporting the Zirids during the crisis that followed the Norman attacks on coastal cities and islands such as Djerba, Mahdia, Tripoli, and Béjaïa. Particular attention is given to the naval blockade associated with Mahdia, which reflected the growing significance of maritime organization, naval logistics, and military mobilization in the central Mediterranean. Although the Hammadid fleet was unable to permanently halt Norman expansion, these efforts represented an important stage in the development of organized naval resistance in the Maghreb. The study further examines how the Almohads later consolidated and expanded regional naval capabilities, eventually restoring control over major coastal centers and reducing Norman influence in North Africa. The research concludes that naval power played a central role in shaping political stability and maritime security in the medieval Mediterranean world.
