Geoeconomics of Eurasian Transport Communication Networks: The Central Asia South Caucasus Corridor and Armenia’s Logistical Isolation

Öz

This article examines the changing geoeconomic dynamics of Eurasia within the context of transport and logistics cooperation between the Turkic states of Central Asia and the South Caucasus. Disruptions affecting the Northern Corridor have increased attention to the Trans Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor) as an alternative route for East West trade. For the landlocked Turkic states of Central Asia, diversifying access to global markets is a central policy concern, and Azerbaijan has come to play an increasingly important role as a regional transit and logistics hub. The study also analyzes the structural causes and consequences of Armenia’s long term logistical isolation. It argues that Armenia’s exclusion from major transnational projects such as the Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, the Baku Tbilisi Erzurum (BTE) gas pipeline, and the Baku Tbilisi Kars (BTK) railway is closely linked to the unresolved conflict and its associated political risks. In the post conflict period, the Zangezur Corridor is discussed as a potential complement to the Middle Corridor that could offer Central Asian countries a shorter overland route to Türkiye and Europe. The article also evaluates Yerevan’s “Crossroads of Peace” initiative and the infrastructural, geographical, and financial constraints it faces.
