God, Faith, and Spiritual Perfection in Haji Bektash Veli

Öz

This study examines the concepts of God and faith in the thought of Haji Bektash Veli within the theological, ethical, and mystical framework of Bektashi philosophy. Drawing upon a qualitative textual and conceptual analysis, the research is based on the hermeneutical interpretation of primary and secondary sources concerning Haji Bektash Veli’s theological and ethical teachings. It argues that Haji Bektash Veli developed a human-centered understanding of faith founded upon divine love, moral responsibility, and spiritual perfection. His conception of God is grounded in the monotheistic principles of classical Islamic theology while simultaneously enriched by the esoteric dimensions of Sufi thought. The study further demonstrates that faith in Bektashi philosophy is not confined to doctrinal affirmation but is conceived as a dynamic unity of belief, action, intention, and ethical conduct. Within this framework, concepts such as divine love, spiritual purification, reason, and moral maturity are examined through the doctrine of the “four gates and forty stations.” The article also evaluates Haji Bektash Veli’s theological perspective in relation to classical Islamic theology, Sufi metaphysics, and the doctrine of waḥdat al-wujūd. It concludes that his philosophy offers an integrated spiritual and ethical system whose intellectual and moral significance remains relevant to contemporary discussions of religion, ethics, and humanism.
