Russo–Ottoman Military–Political Conflict in the Second Half of the 19th Century and Its Results

Öz

The Russo–Ottoman conflict in the second half of the nineteenth century emerged from the interaction of ideological, political, and strategic developments that transformed the international environment of Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the South Caucasus. The Crimean War, which resulted in a major setback for Russia, had significant consequences for Russian political thought and contributed to the growing influence of nationalist and Pan-Slavic currents. The revolutionary movements of 1848 and the political developments that followed strengthened intellectual connections between Russia and Slavic communities across Europe. In this context, Russian intellectuals increasingly promoted the idea of Slavic unity and emphasized Russia’s role in the political future of the Slavic world. These ideological developments coincided with the gradual intensification of the Eastern Question and the emergence of new geopolitical rivalries involving the Ottoman Empire, Russia, and the European great powers. The political crisis in the Balkans, particularly the unrest in Bosnia and Herzegovina, further deepened regional instability and increased diplomatic tensions. As competing interests among the major powers prevented the establishment of a lasting political settlement, the crisis evolved into a broader international confrontation. These developments ultimately contributed to the outbreak of the Russo–Ottoman War of 1877–1878. The conflict reshaped political relations in the Balkans and the South Caucasus and became one of the most significant turning points in late nineteenth-century international politics.
