Idioms in Political and Journalistic Discourse: Pragmatic and Rhetorical Perspectives

Öz

Idioms are culturally grounded linguistic expressions that play a significant role in political and journalistic communication. Beyond their figurative meanings, they serve as effective communicative resources that enhance rhetorical impact, support persuasive aims, and facilitate shared interpretive frameworks between speakers and audiences. This study investigates the pragmatic and rhetorical functions of idiomatic expressions in political speeches and journalistic texts through a qualitative, corpus-assisted discourse analysis. The findings demonstrate that idioms contribute to meaning construction by simplifying complex issues, generating implicit meanings, and strengthening audience engagement. Evidence from political and media discourse further indicates that idiomatic expressions function as strategic tools for shaping interpretations, reinforcing ideological perspectives, and increasing communicative effectiveness. Rather than operating merely as stylistic embellishments, idioms emerge as multifunctional discourse resources that influence how political and social realities are represented, interpreted, and communicated. The study highlights the importance of idiomatic language in contemporary public communication and underscores its role in the interaction between language, cognition, and discourse.
