Educational Institutions in Nakhchivan from Antiquity to the Medieval Period

Öz

This article examines the historical development of educational institutions in Nakhchivan from antiquity to the medieval period. Based on archaeological findings, archival materials, and historical sources, the study explores the evolution of educational traditions in one of the oldest cultural regions of Azerbaijan. Particular attention is devoted to the early forms of literacy, knowledge transmission, and learning practices reflected in rock inscriptions, archaeological monuments, and religious institutions. The research demonstrates that educational activities in the region developed through successive cultural and religious transformations while preserving important elements of continuity. The study indicates that Zoroastrian religious centers, including fire temples, served not only spiritual functions but also contributed to the transmission of religious and moral knowledge. Following the spread of Islam, educational institutions such as maktabs, kuttabs, and madrasas became central components of intellectual life. These institutions provided instruction in both religious and secular disciplines, including languages, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, history, and literature. In addition, khanqahs and zawiyas played a complementary role by functioning as centers of learning, manuscript culture, and spiritual education. The findings reveal that by the medieval period Nakhchivan had developed into a significant educational and cultural center within the broader Islamic world. Organized curricula, qualified teachers, educational endowments, and institutional administration demonstrate the existence of a well-established tradition of learning. The article contributes to the historiography of education by highlighting the continuity, diversity, and institutional development of educational structures in Nakhchivan and their contribution to the intellectual history of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus.
