The evolution of civic education in Azerbaijani pedagogical thought: Historical heritage and modern perspectives

Öz

This article examines the historical development of civic education in Azerbaijani pedagogical thought from tradition to modernity. Civic education constitutes an important component of personal development, social integration, and cultural identity formation. The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of civic values and concepts of citizenship within Azerbaijani educational thought, with particular attention to the contributions of classical thinkers and modern educators. The study employs historical-pedagogical analysis and content analysis of literary sources, philosophical texts, and educational policy documents. The findings indicate that civic education in Azerbaijan reflects a synthesis of Eastern philosophical traditions and contemporary approaches to citizenship, evolving from folk traditions and epic literature to institutionalized educational practices while preserving national identity and social cohesion. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the ways in which historical pedagogical heritage continues to influence contemporary civic education in Azerbaijan.
