Similar Typological Parallels of the Arab Folk Epic Genre in Azerbaijani Literature

Öz

This study examines the typological parallels between Arabic folk epics (sīras) and the Turkish-Azerbaijani epic tradition from a comparative perspective. It aims to identify the distinctive characteristics of Arabic folk sīras and to reveal their shared features with the Turkish-Azerbaijani epic tradition by employing comparative-typological, comparative-historical, structural-semantic, and hermeneutic methods. More than twenty Arabic folk epics, widely disseminated across Eastern and Western cultures, constitute the primary subject of the study. The article examines the distinctive features of the Arabic epic tradition, the principles underlying its development, and the linguistic, thematic, and compositional characteristics of its poetic structure. From both typological and chronological perspectives, the sīra represents a complex epic genre whose origin and evolution remain central issues in Arabic and international folklore studies. The findings demonstrate significant typological similarities between Arabic folk sīras and Turkish-Azerbaijani epics in terms of the heroic model, plot composition, motif system, performance tradition, and epic worldview. These parallels reflect not only historical and cultural interaction but also a broader shared Eastern epic tradition.
