The Historical Development of Arabic Linguistics and the Contribution of Medieval Azerbaijani Scholars

Öz

This study examines the historical development of Arabic linguistics and explores the contribution of medieval Azerbaijani scholars to the discipline. Using historical and descriptive methods, it traces the evolution of Arabic linguistics from its emergence in response to the need to preserve the correct recitation and interpretation of the Holy Qur'an to its establishment as an independent field of scholarship. Particular attention is given to the formation of Arabic grammatical thought, the intellectual influence of the Basran and Kufan schools, and the expansion of linguistic studies into grammar, morphology, lexicography, and philology. The study also examines the scholarly activities of Khaṭīb al-Tabrīzī, al-Zanjānī, and al-Ardabīlī, emphasizing their contributions to grammatical scholarship, philological interpretation, Arabic language teaching, and the preservation of the classical linguistic tradition. The findings indicate that medieval Azerbaijani scholars played an important role not only in transmitting existing linguistic knowledge but also in its systematization and further development. Their scholarly legacy constitutes an integral part of the history of Arabic philology and reflects the broader intellectual heritage of medieval Islamic civilization.
