Conceptualization of Colors in Azerbaijani: Symbolic and Connotative Semantization of the Lexeme “Ağ” (“White”)

Öz

Color has a universal character as one of the basic concepts of culture. The conceptualization of colors is the process by which subjective meanings, associations, and symbolic functions are attributed to them. This process goes beyond the physical properties (wavelength) of colors and enriches them with abstract meanings based on cultural, psychological, or individual experiences. Thus, the conceptualization of color transforms it from a purely visual perception into a carrier of information. Color names in different languages are not limited to their literal meanings, but also acquire sacred, symbolic, figurative, and connotative shades. Connotation is the positive, negative, or neutral emotional-associative meaning that a linguistic unit creates in the speaker or listener. Figurative and associative thinking play an important role in the formation of the connotative meanings of lexemes denoting color. As with other lexical units, the connotation of color names is both universal and national. The semantic load of color names is related to the thinking, beliefs, and cultural experience of the people and is often based on mythological roots. For example, the color white, which is a symbol of purity, innocence, clarity, and success among most peoples of the world, was considered an indicator of greatness, strength, and justice in the beliefs of Turkic peoples, including ancient shamans. In Azerbaijani, the lexeme “ağ” (“white”) may create both positive and negative connotations in expressions. However, in some expressions, the component “ağ” does not act as a lexeme denoting color and is not directly related to the concept of color from an etymological point of view.

Azerbaycan Türkçesinde Renklerin Kavramsallaştırılması: “Ağ” (“Beyaz”) Kelimesinin Sembolik ve Konotatif Anlamlandırılması

Renk, kültürün temel kavramlarından biri olarak evrensel bir niteliğe sahiptir. Renklerin kavramsallaştırılması, onlara öznel anlamlar, çağrışımlar ve sembolik işlevler yükleme sürecidir. Bu süreç, renklerin fiziksel özelliklerinin (dalga boyunun) ötesine geçerek onların kültürel, psikolojik veya bireysel deneyimlere dayanan soyut anlamlarla zenginleştirilmesini kapsar. Dolayısıyla, renkleri kavramsallaştırmak, onları sadece görsel algı olmaktan çıkarıp bir bilgi taşıyıcısına dönüştürür. Çeşitli dillerde renk isimleri yalnızca doğrudan anlamlarıyla sınırlı kalmaz, aynı zamanda kutsal, sembolik, mecazi ve konotatif (yananlamsal) tonlar da kazanır. Konotasyon, bir dil biriminin konuşanda veya dinleyende oluşturduğu olumlu, olumsuz veya nötr (tarafsız) duygusal-çağrışımsal anlamdır. Renk bildiren sözcüklerin konotatif anlamlarının oluşumunda insanın imgesel ve çağrışımsal düşüncesi önemli rol oynar. Diğer sözcüklerde olduğu gibi, renk isimlerinin konotasyonları da evrensel ve ulusal bir karaktere sahiptir. Renk isimlerinin anlamsal yükü, bir halkın düşüncesi, inançları ve kültürel deneyimiyle ilişkilidir ve çoğu zaman mitolojik köklere dayanır. Örneğin, birçok dünya kültüründe saflık, berraklık, masumiyet ve başarı sembolü olan beyaz renk, eski şamanlar da dahil olmak üzere Türk halklarının inançlarında büyüklük, güç ve adalet göstergesi olarak kabul edilmiştir. Azerbaycan Türkçesinde “ağ” (“beyaz”) sözcüğü, ifadelerde hem olumlu hem de olumsuz konotasyonlar yaratabilir. Ancak bazı ifadelerde “ağ” bileşeni renk belirten bir sözcüksel unsur olarak işlev görmez ve etimolojik açıdan renk kavramıyla doğrudan ilişkili değildir.
