Strategic Interests of Azerbaijan and Türkiye in the Zangezur Corridor

Öz

The Zangezur Corridor has gained increasing significance in the South Caucasus as transport connectivity has become closely linked to economic relations and geopolitical interests. This study examines the strategic interests of Azerbaijan and Türkiye in the Zangezur Corridor and evaluates its potential role in regional transport connectivity, economic cooperation, and bilateral strategic relations. The study employs a qualitative research design based on document analysis and a comparative analytical approach. The analysis focuses on three interconnected dimensions: Azerbaijan’s interests in strengthening its connection with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and expanding its transport and transit potential; Türkiye’s interests in improving its position within regional and international transport networks and strengthening links with the Turkic states; and the role of the corridor in Azerbaijani–Turkish strategic cooperation. The findings indicate that the significance of the Zangezur Corridor extends beyond the establishment of a direct transport connection. For Azerbaijan, the corridor is associated with Nakhchivan connectivity, transit capacity, and broader economic opportunities, while for Türkiye it is linked to regional connectivity, the Middle Corridor, and relations with the Turkic world. The convergence of these interests provides a basis for strengthening bilateral cooperation and may contribute to wider regional economic integration in the South Caucasus.
