The Strategic Importance of Türkiye in European Security: Navigating the Transatlantic Realignment of 2025–2026

Öz

The European security environment is experiencing a period of systemic instability driven by uncertainty surrounding traditional U.S. security commitments and growing tensions within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The shift in U.S. foreign policy following the 2024 presidential transition, increasingly associated with the transactional approach of the Trump 2.0 administration, has encouraged European actors to reconsider the foundations of transatlantic security and pursue greater strategic autonomy. Against this background, this study examines Türkiye’s role as a strategically significant actor in the development of a more robust European security architecture. It analyzes Türkiye’s military capacity, geostrategic position, defence-industrial capabilities built on its doctrine of national self-sufficiency, diplomatic balancing, and regional security role during 2025–2026. The analysis indicates that Türkiye has moved beyond its traditional characterization as a NATO flank state and has assumed a more prominent position within the broader European security environment. Its defence-industrial capacity, role in the Black Sea under the Montreux Convention, and importance as an energy and connectivity hub enhance its strategic relevance, while its objective of full accession to the European Union remains unchanged. The study argues for a pragmatic security partnership between the European Union and Türkiye alongside, rather than in place of, the existing accession framework, while identifying political reluctance within the EU as a significant constraint on deeper cooperation.
