Migration Processes in Armenia After the Second Karabakh War (2020–2023)

Öz

This study examines migration processes in the Republic of Armenia after the Second Karabakh War of 2020 within the context of demographic and socio economic change. Based on official statistics of the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia, institutional reports, and press sources, the study applies a descriptive and comparative analysis of migration and demographic indicators for the period 2020–2023, using 2019 as the pre war reference year. Emigration, return migration, internal migration, natural population change, and population aging are evaluated by year and region. The findings indicate that outward migration, particularly labor migration to the Russian Federation, intensified in 2021, that mortality increased during the war and the COVID 19 pandemic, and that population decline affected border regions such as Syunik, Vayots Dzor, and Gegharkunik. These developments appear to have deepened demographic problems that already existed before 2020, including low natural growth, the outflow of young and skilled people, and population aging. As the data are descriptive, the results are interpreted as associations rather than causal effects. The study suggests that reducing migration pressures requires policies that improve living standards, expand employment opportunities, and support regional development.
