Artificial Intelligence as a Communicative Subject: A Graded Framework of Language Use, Interpretation, and Normativity

Öz

Can an artificial intelligence system count as a communicative subject without possessing human-like consciousness or independent responsibility? This conceptual study argues that the issue cannot be resolved by treating language models either as mere instruments or as full-fledged subjects. Using an analytic-philosophical method, it integrates four criteria—public rule-governed language use, reflexive communicative intentionality, normative accountability, and reciprocal interpretive integration—into a single evaluative framework. The criteria are then distinguished across three levels: functional-interactive participation, discursive-normative standing, and ontological subjectivity. Large language models can support interpretation and coordination at the first level, but this does not establish that they independently undertake commitments at the second or possess experience and original intentionality at the third. Normative responsibility is thus a requirement for full discursive subjecthood, not a prerequisite for every form of communicative participation. Recent debates about linguistic form, understanding, and artificial agency sharpen this distinction. The contribution is a non-binary vocabulary that specifies both the communicative role of AI systems and the limits of claims made on their behalf.
