Free Verse and Poetic Modernity in Contemporary South Azerbaijani Literature: The Poetry of Gholamreza Sabri Tabrizi

Öz

This article examines free verse in contemporary South Azerbaijani literature through the poetry of Gholamreza Sabri Tabrizi. Using close reading and historical-comparative analysis, it considers selected poems alongside Turkic rhythmic traditions and twentieth-century literary modernism. The discussion addresses the cultural circumstances of the poet’s work, including linguistic restrictions, migration, and national consciousness. It argues that Tabrizi’s free verse reshapes rather than abandons rhythm through variable line lengths, repetition, alliteration, syntactic segmentation, and semantic progression. The analysis also explores homeland, exile, maternal love, womanhood, childhood, social justice, and human dignity. Quotations in Azerbaijani are accompanied by English translations to make their thematic and formal features accessible to a wider readership. The findings suggest that Tabrizi combines modern poetic experimentation with Azerbaijani oral-poetic memory and inherited syllabic rhythms, giving personal experience a wider cultural and ethical resonance. His poetry offers a revealing example of the coexistence of formal innovation and literary continuity in South Azerbaijani writing.
