ABOUT SOME TURKIC TOPONYMS OF CAUCAS (ON EXAMPLE OF THE NORTH-WEST REGION OF AZERBAIJAN AND SOUTHEN DAGHESTAN)

Abstract

The territory of Caucas can be considered as unparalleled tresuary for researching of Turkic history. Turkic place names preserved in Caucas, are of great importance to identify the most ancient Turkic strata. Ethnic penetration of ancient Turkic tribes in the Caucasus took place as two major mountain passes - Derbent and Daryal passes through the other Great Caucasus mountains. A striking illustration of this is the name of the mountain pass "Hun beli", which connects the north-western part of Azerbaijan and the North Caucasus, and retained the name of the tribe of the Huns. In Caucas preserved toponyms associated with Scythian-Cimmerian-Saka tribes who settled there since the VII century BC. Cimmerians names preserved in the name of villages Gymyr Gymyrly of Zagatala district, Kemerli and Gamarli of Gazakh district. With the tribes of the Sakas in Azerbaijan are connected names Sheki, Zagatala, settlements of Sakan. Area between the rivers Kura and Araz in medieval sources called "Balasakan" (in ancient Turkic languages "bala" means "field, plain"), that is Sakas plain. In Azerbaijan, there are a number of names associated with the Turkic tribe kynyks which Mahmoud Kashgarly refers to one of the 22 branches of the Oghuz. Kynyks name is preserved in the following place names: river Ganikh, villages Ashagi and Bash Goynuk in Sheki district, the mountain Gonukh and and the family Ganyglar in Ilisu village ,both the Goynuk quarter in Sarybash village of the Gah district, and etc. Thus, along with the written and archaeological sources indicate the residence of Turkic tribes in the territory of Caucas from the ancient period, evidenced by numerous place names which are preserved to this day
