The Birth, Development and Transformation of German Nationalism from the Middle Ages to the Present

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 12 Sayı: 1, 578 - 606

Öz

Throughout its history, German nationalism has undergone significant transformations under the influence of internal and external factors. This article analyses how German nationalism has been shaped by the interaction of internal factors such as domestic politics, social structure, economic conditions and cultural dynamics, and external factors such as international relations, balance of power and global events. Internal factors include Germany's political and cultural history, social structure and cultural elements, while external factors include international relations and power dynamics. The study provides a historical framework for understanding the complex nature of German nationalism, emphasising that this transformation can shed light on both Germany's past and global history and international politics. By analysing the origins, development and modern forms of German nationalism, the article aims to contribute to the academic debate on the subject. The interaction of internal and external factors can contribute to the literature not only on German nationalism in particular, but also on nationalism and national identity formations in general.
