University students' misconceptions about stuttering

Öz

Purpose: University life significantly influences character and can be affected by peers' misconceptions about stuttering. Method: This study explores university students' misconceptions about stuttering using a mixed design. A total of 269 students (196 females, 73 males) completed the Misconceptions About Stuttering Questionnaire (MSQ). Result: Most participants believe that fear (96.3%), stress (94.8%), and psychological trauma (92.2%) cause stuttering. Over half think stuttering is a disease (53.9%) and is caused by imitation (53.2%). Additionally, 74.3% believe that taking a deep breath before speaking improves fluency, and 98.9% think reading aloud increases fluency. 74% correctly identified the profession specializing in stuttering, with knowledge differences affecting MSQ scores (p = .041 < .05). Conclusion: The lack of accurate information may lead to misconceptions and negative attitudes. Seminars on stuttering for university students are suggested as an effective way to enhance their understanding of this speech disorder.
