Perceived Health Impacts of Eating Out: Consumer Insights and Implications
Öz
The increasing trend of consuming meals prepared outside the home is driven by various social and economic factors, such as urbanization, greater female participation in the workforce, and more time spent away from home. This behavior is further supported by the convenience and variety offered by restaurants. However, this growing habit may also lead to health-related concerns. While restaurants were once perceived as places that supported healthy lifestyles, today, some individuals believe they do not always promote healthy eating habits. This study aims to assess the validity of this perception and to explore its underlying health-related dimensions. Using a case study approach, qualitative research was conducted with 21 participants living in İzmir, selected through criterion and snowball sampling methods. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were carried out, and the data were analyzed using descriptive content analysis. The findings revealed that participants associate eating out with certain risks and make clear distinctions between healthy and unhealthy foods. Importantly, hygiene and cleanliness were identified as the most critical factors in evaluating whether food prepared outside the home is considered “healthy.”
