Proof for the Immortality of the Soul as an Eternal Form in Plato

Apology, Meno, Phaedo, and Timaeus are the texts to be examined for a research on the soul in Plato (d. 347 BCE). As it is known, three main periods are designated for Plato's works: early works, middle period works, and late works. According to this division, Apology and Meno are early works, while Phaedo and Timaeus are grouped in the middle period works. These works also show not only the chronological order of Plato's understanding of the soul but also the formative stages of his thought. Focusing on Phaedo, this article aims to examine the following three arguments developed for the immortality of the soul: cyclical argument, arguments from “recollection” and “affinity of souls to forms and gods.” It also discusses whether or not these three arguments are adequate both in proving the previous existence of the soul independent of the body and in explaining certain fundamental issues found in the controversy over the soul-body relationship. The theory of recollection as an argument proving that the soul existed before the body appears for the first time in Meno. This argument is founded on a method based on teaching/reminding by testing knowledge. The cyclical argument and the argument from the affinity of souls to form and gods are elaborated in the Phaedo, along with the argument from recollection. Objections directed to these arguments are evaluated by both making use of the objections of the participants in the Phaedo and with the help of certain objections by Aristotle (d. 322 BCE) in his De Anima. Apology and Timaeus are ignored in this article as they do not play a central role in examining the arguments put forward.

Platon’da Ruhun Ezelî Bir Form Olarak Ölümsüzlüğünün İspatı

Öz

Platon’da (ö. MÖ 347) ruha dair yapılacak bir araştırma için incelenmesi gereken metinler Apology, Meno, Phaedo ve Timaeus’tur. Platon’un eserleri için üç ana dönem tayin edilir. Bunlar erken dönem, orta dönem ve geç dönem eserleridir. Bu ayrıma göre Apology ve Meno erken dönem, Phaedo ve Timaeus ise orta dönem eserleridir. Bu eserler aynı zamanda Platon’un ruh anlayışının sadece kronolojik sırasını değil aynı zamanda düşüncesinin oluşum aşamalarını da göstermektedir. Bu makalenin amacı Phaedo’yu merkeze alarak ruha dair geliştirilen “döngüsel (karşıtlık),” “hatırlama” ve “ruhların formlara ve tanrılara yakınlığı” argümanlarını ortaya koymaktır. Aynı zamanda makale bu üç argümanın, hem ruhun bedenden bağımsız (önceki) varlığı ve ölümsüzlüğünü ispatlamada hem de ruh-beden ilişkisi bağlamında tartışılan birtakım meseleleri izah etmede yeterli olup olmadığını tartışmaktır. “Hatırlama argümanı” ruhun bedenden önce de var olduğunu ispat eden bir argüman olarak ilk defa Meno’da karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu nedenle argüman, bilgiyi sınayarak öğretme/hatırlatmaya dayanan bir yönteme dayandırılmaktadır. “Döngüsel argüman” ve “ruhların form ve tanrılara yakınlığı argümanı” ise hatırlama argümanı ile birlikte Phaedo’da inceden inceye işlenmektedir. Bu makalede argümanlara yöneltilen itirazlar hem Phaedo’da muhatapların itirazları hem de Aristoteles’in (ö. MÖ 322) De Anima’daki bazı itirazları yardımıyla değerlendirilmektedir. Apology ve Timaeus öne sürülen argümanların incelenmesi açısından merkezi bir rol oluşturmadığı için burada göz ardı edilmektedir.
