The Status of Women as Bearers of the Image of God in Early Medieval Christian Thought through the Thought of St. Augustine

The thoughts and interpretations of canonical thinkers about femininity undoubtedly play a very important role in the establishment of the androcentric perspective that leads to the permanent exclusion of women from the privileged relationship that men have with God, and that this perspective continues to have an impact on contemporary ideas. The ideas put forward by canonical thinkers reveal the model of devaluation of women that is still prevalent in much of contemporary Western philosophy. This model, which is a reflection of the West’s hierarchical dualist tradition of thought, serves to legitimize domination in every field, so it is important to reveal this way of thinking through the ideas of canonical thinkers. One of these canonical thinkers was Aurelius Augustine (d. 430), the first important Christian philosopher, and considered one of the main architects of Western Medieval Christian culture. His thoughts on the role and status of women has been accepted as normative for centuries, especially in Western Christian culture. In addition, his thoughts continue to have an impact on contemporary ideas. Therefore, it is important to examine Augustine’s thoughts. In this context, the article aims to examine whether Augustine thought that women, like men, were created in the image of God, which is a key point in his thoughts on the role and status of women. Examining the masculine-paternal conceptions in the commentaries of Augustine and revealing the instability of the conditions in which women are excluded from the privileged relationship that men have with God, can contribute to weakening gender bias and raising awareness of this issue. Augustine’s texts contain some ambiguities and contradictions regarding whether he thought that women, like men, were created in the image of God. Augustine argues that men and women are spiritually equal; he associates women with the body and men with the mind, and sees women as inferior in terms of bodily difference. He associates women’s physically inferior position with a lower form of reason. In line with the idea that the body should be subordinated to the soul, Augustine positions women as subordinate to men. Such a positioning runs counter to his view of women’s spiritual nature as equivalent to that of men’s. It can be said that these contradictory tensions in Augustine's conception of womanhood can be more easily understood when read in the context of the mind-spirit/body-matter dualism he inherited from Greek philosophy.

Aziz Augustinus’un Düşünceleri Üzerinden Erken Orta Çağ Hıristiyan Düşüncesinde Kadının Tanrı’nın Suretini Taşıma Statüsü

Kadının, erkeğin Tanrı’yla kurduğu ayrıcalıklı ilişkiden sürekli olarak dışlanmasına yol açan androsentrik bakış açısının yerleşmesinde ve bu bakış açısının çağdaş fikirler üzerinde de etkili olmaya devam etmesinde kanonik düşünürlerin kadınlık hakkındaki düşünce ve yorumları hiç şüphesiz çok önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Kanonik düşünürlerin öne sürdüğü düşünceler, çağdaş Batı felsefesinin çoğunda hâlâ yaygın olan, kadının değersizleştirilmesi modelini ortaya koymaktadır. Batı’nın hiyerarşik düalist düşünce geleneğinin bir izdüşümü olan bu model, tahakkümü her alanda meşrulaştırmaya hizmet ettiğinden bu düşünce biçiminin kanonik düşünürlerin görüşleri üzerinden serimlenerek açığa çıkarılması elzemdir. Bu kanonik düşünürlerden biri, ilk önemli Hıristiyan filozoflarından olan Aurelius Augustinus’tur (ö. 430). Batı Orta Çağ Hıristiyan kültürünün başlıca mimarlarından biri olarak kabul edilen Augustinus’un kadının rolü ve statüsüne dair düşünceleri, özellikle Batı Hıristiyan kültürü üzerinde yüzyıllardır normatif olarak kabul edildiğinden ve çağdaş fikirler üzerinde de etkili olmaya devam ettiğinden söz konusu düşüncelerinin irdelenmesi önem teşkil etmektedir. Bu kapsamda makale, Augustinus’un kadının rolü ve statüsüne yönelik düşüncelerinin kilit noktası durumunda olan, kadınların da tıpkı erkekler gibi Tanrı’nın suretinde yaratıldığını düşünüp düşünmediği konusunun irdelenmesi amacına yöneliktir. Augustinus’un yorumlarındaki eril-paternal tasavvurların irdelenmesinin, erkeğin Tanrı’yla kurduğu ayrıcalıklı ilişkiden kadının dışlandığı koşulların istikrarsızlığının ifşa edilmesinin, cinsiyet önyargısının zayıflatılmasına, bu konuda bir farkındalık sağlanmasına katkısı olacağı düşünülmektedir. Kadınların da tıpkı erkekler gibi Tanrı’nın suretinde yaratıldığını düşünüp düşünmediği konusunda Augustinus’un metinleri bazı belirsizlikler ve çelişkiler içermektedir. Kadın ve erkeğin ruhani açıdan eşit olduğunu savunmasına karşın kadını bedenle, erkeği akılla ilişkilendiren Augustinus, kadını bedensel farklılık bakımından aşağı görmektedir. Kadının bedensel olarak aşağı bir konumda olmasını ise, daha düşük bir akıl biçimiyle ilişkilendirmektedir. Augustinus, bedenin ruha tabi kılınması gerektiği düşüncesine koşut olarak, kadınları erkeklere tabi olarak konumlandırmaktadır. Böyle bir konumlandırma, onun kadının ruhani doğasını erkeğin ruhani doğasıyla eşdeğer olarak görmesine ters düşmektedir. Augustinus’un kadınlık tasavvurundaki bu çelişkili gerilimlerin, onun Yunan felsefesinden miras aldığı akıl-ruh/beden-madde düalizmi ekseninde okunduğunda daha kolay anlaşılabileceği söylenebilir.
