THE DAY OF THE WEEK EFFECT IN ISE

This study searches empirically whether the day of the week anomaly is in the ISE. Although several writers have examined this anomaly so far, there is not any study related the period after the last big economic crisis. First, we summarized previous studies related this anomaly. After that an empirical study was performed. For the empirical part of the study, we employed the closing values of ISE-100 for the period of Jan.1st, 2002-Jun. 30th, 2005 and for each year as sub periods. At the beginning of the study our expectation was that the investment strategies of investors became more stable in the “tranquil” period. According to our results, this expectation was extremely satisfied. In 2003, 2004 and 2005, the average returns of the days of the week found statistically insignificant. This means that, there are not significant differences among returns of the days.

İMKB’DE HAFTANIN GÜNÜ ETKİSİ

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, İMKB’de haftanın günü etkisinin olup olmadığını araştırmaktır. Bu anomali üzerine pek çok çalışma olmasına rağmen, son büyük ekonomik krizden sonraki dönemi kapsayan bir araştırma yoktur. Burada ilk olarak konu ile ilgili literatür özetlenmiş arkasından ampirik bir çalışma yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın ampirik bölümünde, 1 Ocak 2002-30 Haziran 2005 dönemine ait ve ayrıca alt dönemler olarak her bir yıla ait günlük İMKB 100 endeksi kapanış değerleri kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın başlangıcındaki beklentimiz, yatırımcıların yatırım stratejilerinin “sakin” bir dönemde daha durağan hale geleceği yönündeydi. Bu beklentimiz fazlasıyla karşılanmıştır. Zira, 2003, 2004 ve 2005 yıllarında haftanın günlerinin ortalama getirileri istatistiksel olarak anlamsız bulunmuşlardır. Bu ise, günlük getiriler arasında anlamlı bir farklılığın olmadığını göstermektedir.
