RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CORRUPTION AND PUBLIC DEBT: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION ON THE EU COUNTRIES
Öz
The public debt is one of the main causes of macroeconomic instability. The public debt is affected the economic, political, social and institutional structure of every nation. It is expressed that the phenomenon of corruption is one of the institutional factors that affect the public debt. In the other words, the misuse of public power for personal interests, which are referred to as the phenomenon of corruption, both leading to adverse effects on public expenditure and public revenue. This destroys the balance of income and expenditure of the state and can lead to an increase in public debt. The purpose of this paper is to empirically test to the impact of corruption on public debt for the 27 EU countries by using 2011 data and cross-section analysis method. According to the empirical results of the study, it was found that corruption had statistically significant and negative impact on public debt
