THE EFFECT OF COMMISSIONING ON TOURISTS AS A TYPE OF TOURIST HARRESSMENT

Öz

The term which is known as commissioning among Turkish people is studied under the subject of commissioning and titled as “vendor harassment” in the literature because of the fact that it includes disturbing behaviors for tourists. The fact that the number of studies about the subject is limited and most of them were held abroad enhances the value of current and future studies in Turkey. The main purpose of this study is to understand how the foreign tourists who spend their holidays in Alanya which is one of the most important tourism destinations in Turkey perceive the commissioning and how they react to it. It is a qualitative study and the data is collected via semistructured and open ended questions. In order to collect the data, face to face interviews were conducted with foreign tourists from 15 different nations who stay in various regions of Alanya. After the content analysis of the data, it was found that the tourists’ perceptions regarding vendors in Alanya are clustered under three different themes. These themes are titled as positive perception, negative perception and neutral perception. It was found that whether the tourists find the behaviors of vendors who conduct commissioning disturbing or not differs according to the gender and the board type of the tourist. It was also found that, under any circumstances, none of the tourists who find commissioning disturbing shops from the vendors who conduct commissioning. According to the findings, the tourists who are annoyed by the vendors who conduct commissioning develop two types of reaction being behavioral reaction and psychological reaction
