The Role of Advertising in the Creation of National Identity: A Study on İhap Hulusi Görey Posters in Early Republican Advertising

Öz

From a structuralist perspective advertisements are not merely marketing tools but also tools that produce social life and cultural codes. In this context, behind the visible faces of advertisements lie the meanings they convey to society. Cultural structures are produced through the symbols carried by advertisements. National identity, too, is a structure of meaning that is not given but produced. Advertising activities play a significant role in the creation of the new social life and identity emerged with the establishment of the Republic. This study aims to examine how national identity was idealized in early Republican advertisements. To this end, 12 posters designed by İhap Hulusi Görey, selected through purposive sampling, were analyzed using semiotics method. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the relevant posters depicted the clothes of modern Turkish women and modern Turkish men, and reflected the lifestyle envisaged for Turkish people and their understanding of consuming domestic goods and saving in line with economic policies.
