A Bibliometric Analysis of Research on Crowds and Disasters: A Vosviewer-Based Study Using the Scopus Database
Öz
Crowds are defined as situations in which large numbers of individuals congregate in close proximity. These environments can be observed in everyday settings such as shopping malls and metro stations, as well as planned events like football matches and the Olympic Games. In such settings, physical closeness, lack of social distancing and insufficient hygiene may pose significant public health and safety risks. When not properly managed, crowds can harm large numbers of people and exacerbate the impacts of existing disasters. The relationship between crowds and disasters is critical to risk assessment and crisis management. This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research within the context of crowds and disasters by examining documents indexed in the Scopus database using the keywords “crowd and disaster”. Bibliometric visualizations were generated using VOSviewer software. The analysis revealed that the most frequently used keywords were disaster management, crowd disasters, crowdsourcing, social media, and disaster response. In more recent years, keywords such as metro station, crowd evacuation, emergency evacuation, crowd disasters and stampede have gained prominence. It was also found that studies in this area spanned multiple disciplines, notably computer science, engineering, and the social sciences. Based on the findings, three research recommendations are proposed: fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, enhancing international cooperation and promoting research on crowds and disasters.
