Chickens, eggs, and replication

Öz

Thurman and Fisher (1988) report that egg output Granger-predicts chicken stocks in annual U.S. data, while chicken stocks do not predict egg output. This paper rebuilds their 1930-1983 series from USDA Agricultural Statistics yearbooks, records the publication vintages behind each candidate series, compares 66 plausible vintage paths with the published table, and extends the selected series through 2025. The closest reconstruction matches the original direction. Egg output predicts later chicken stocks, while chicken stocks do not predict later egg output. Log-growth estimates for 1930-1983 preserve that direction, while the pooled 1930-2025 U.S. series gives weaker full-sample support concentrated in the one-lag robust check. In international panels, FAO total-chicken data show a related conventional candidate pattern, but residual autocorrelation and sample restrictions prevent treating it as a stable panel Granger result. Eurostat laying-hen data and the matched FAO-Eurostat overlap do not support a stable direction. The paper contributes more than a new Granger estimate. It turns a vague source note into a reproducible data-construction and estimation workflow.
