Aim: This study was conducted to examine the effect of anxiety levels of primiparous pregnant women on their readiness for hygienic care of the newborn. Subjects and Methods: The universe of this descriptive study consists of pregnant women attending Inonu University Health Sciences Faculty Midwifery Department Pregnant Education Class. The study was completed with the participation of 306 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria. The data of the study were collected by face-to-face interview method using “Descriptive Characteristics Form”, “Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Questionnaire-Revised 2” and “Scale for Readiness of Pregnant Women to Hygienic Care of the Newborn”. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, kruskal wallis, mann whitney-u, correlation and regression analyzes were used to evaluate the data. Results: The mean pregnancy-related anxiety score of the participants was calculated as 25.38±9.16, and the mean score of readiness for the hygienic care of the newborn was calculated as 67.23±6.32. It has been determined that pregnancy-related anxiety is related to the years of marriage and educational status, and the readiness of pregnant women for hygienic care of the newborn is related to the years of marriage, having taken care of a child before, and a history of miscarriage. It was determined that there was a low level of correlation between pregnancy-related anxiety and the pregnant women's readiness for newborn hygienic care. Conclusion: It has been determined that pregnancy-related anxiety has a negative effect on the readiness of pregnant women for hygienic care of the newborn. For pregnant women to carry out the care of the newborn more effectively in the postpartum period, factors that may cause anxiety during pregnancy should be determined and prevented.
