AN EXAMPLE OF THE ECONOMIC STRUCTURE’S INFLUENCE ON THE TURKISH FAMILY: ORHAN KEMAL’S THE NOVEL OF THE ‘LITTLE MAN’ SERIES

The “Novel of the Little Man” series consists of a sequence of events experienced by an unnamed protagonist from childhood to marriage and bears clear traces of Orhan Kemal’s own life. While Baba Evi and Avare Yıllar focus directly on the protagonist’s personal experiences, Cemile and Dünya Evi, which appear at first glance to be independent of the series, function as continuations of the first two novels from different perspectives. Within this series, Orhan Kemal narrates the emergence of the “little man” through what he defines as an aesthetic of “enlightened realism.” The protagonist is particularly noteworthy as a figure who fails to comprehend how to exist within the postwar life that is being reconstructed yet marked by political, sociological, and economic chaos, and who is gradually transformed into an individual absorbed by the system that emerges from this process.
The author situates the individual who attempts to position himself within the modernizing state in a Turkish family that maintains its educated, bureaucratic, and traditionally structured character, to which the family itself belongs. While the narrative presents an example of the father–son relationship in the background of the little man’s story, it simultaneously reveals the economic reflections of both traditional and modern patriarchal structures. Although the events in the novels are fictionalized on the basis of the author’s own life story, they also expose how the capitalist mode of production transforms not only men but also women and children. Moreover, the effects of migration and economic hardship that emerged after the First World War on family structure, the erosion of authority brought about by the war, and the modern economic system that was subsequently attempted to be established are embedded in the narrative as subtexts. This study, drawing on these subtexts, focuses on the factors shaping the family of the “little man.”
Orhan Kemal, a novelist writing within the tradition of socialist realism, constructs a representation of family relations across a series of four novels. This study examines that representation within a Marxist analytical framework by integrating the author’s biography with close textual analysis. Particular attention is given to the socio-economic conditions in which the characters are situated, as well as to the ideological implications embedded in the dialogues, in order to identify the ways in which economic structures shape and transform the family. Accordingly, the study seeks to elucidate the functional role of economic relations in the formation of the family and their impact on intra-familial dynamics.

EKONOMİK YAPININ TÜRK AİLESİNİ ŞEKİLLENDİRMESİNE BİR ÖRNEK: ORHAN KEMAL’İN KÜÇÜK ADAMIN ROMANI SERİSİ
Öz
“Küçük adamın romanı” serisi Orhan Kemal’in kendi yaşantısından izler taşıyan, isimsiz bir kahramanın çocukluktan evliliğine kadar başından geçen bir dizi olaylar silsilesinden oluşur. Baba Evi ve Avare Yıllar kahramanın kendi yaşantısına odaklanırken, bu seriden bağımsız gibi görünen Cemile ve Dünya Evi ilk iki romanda farklı açılardan devamı niteliğindedir. Orhan Kemal bu roman serisinde “aydınlık gerçek” olarak nitelediği edebiyat anlayışı içinde “küçük adamın” ortaya çıkışını anlatır. Bu kahraman savaştan sonra yeniden kurulmaya başlayan ve bu kuruluş aşamasında politik, sosyolojik ve ekonomik bakımdan kaotik bir görünüm arz eden hayatın içinde nasıl var olması gerektiğini algılayamayan ve ortaya çıkan sistemin içine çektiği insana dönüşmesi yönüyle dikkat çeker.
Yazar modernleşen devletin içinde kendini konumlandırmaya çalışan insanı ailesinin de mensup olduğu eğitimli, bürokrat ve geleneksel yapısını devam ettiren Türk ailesinde bulur. Roman küçük adamın hikâyesinin arka planında baba-oğul ilişkisinin bir örneği ortaya konulurken, geleneksel ve modern patriyarkal yapının ekonomik izdüşümlerine rastlanır. Romanlar yazarın hayat hikâyesinden hareketle olayları kurgulanırken kapitalist çalışma düzeninin erkekler kadar çocukları ve kadınları nasıl dönüştürdüğünü de ortaya koyar. Öte taraftan Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında ortaya çıkan göç ve ekonomik zorlukların aile yapısına etkileri, savaşla yiten otorite ve sonrasında kurulmaya çalışılan modern ekonomik yapı, kurgu içine yerleştirilmiş bir alt metin olarak verilir. Çalışma romanın bu alt metninden hareketle “küçük adam”ın ailesini şekillendiren unsurlara odaklanır.
Toplumcu gerçekçi çizgide romanlar yazan Orhan Kemal’in dört romandan oluşan serisindeki aile fertlerine dair oluşturduğu kurgu, yazarın biyografisi ve metin incelemesiyle birlikte göz önünde bulundurarak Marksist okuma çerçevesinde değerlendirilecektir. Bu çerçevede özellikle roman karakterlerinin içinde bulundukları durumlar, diyalogların barındırdığı fikirler tespit edilerek ekonomik yapının aileyi etkileyen sebepleri tespit edilecektir. Ailenin şekillenmesinde ekonomik yapının nasıl bir işleve sahip olduğu izah edilmeye çalışılacaktır.
