The Effect of Cultural Background Knowledge on Reading Comprehension in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language

Öz

This study aims to examine the reading comprehension processes of B1-level Kazakh students learning Turkish as a foreign language at Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University through texts overlapping with their cultural background knowledge. The research is designed based on Schema Theory (Rumelhart, 1980) and seeks to reveal the effect of culturally familiar content on meaning-making processes through qualitative data. The participants consist of 20 Kazakh students enrolled in the university's Preparatory Program who have reached B1 level proficiency in Turkish. Data were collected via open-ended questionnaire forms and classroom-based reading activities, and analyzed using the content analysis method with MAXQDA software. Findings indicate that B1-level students can more effectively employ higher-order cognitive processes such as inference, establishing conceptual relationships, and interpretation when engaging with culturally familiar texts. The structuring of meaning-making through their prior cultural experiences and shared schemas significantly enhances their comprehension, particularly in texts where contextual clues are prominent. In this regard, the study demonstrates that culturally aligned content serves as a supportive tool for meaning construction among intermediate-level learners, offering qualitative and original contributions to the literature by highlighting the necessity of considering cultural compatibility in text selection for teaching Turkish as a foreign language.
