The Place of Affective Factors in Comprehension Skills in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 10 Sayı: 2, 433 - 469, 19.09.2025

Öz

This study aims to show the role of affective factors in foreign/second language teaching and teaching Turkish as a foreign language and their place in comprehension skills. In this study, which is a review of the literature, firstly the studies conducted by the researchers that reveal the role of affective factors in foreign/second language teaching and explain their place in comprehension skills were examined, then the studies conducted in the context of teaching Turkish as a foreign language and the findings of these studies were examined. In this study, the systematic review method, which is one of the qualitative research designs, was used. ULAKBİM, Dergipark, YÖK Academic, Web of Science, ERIC, JStor, ScienceDirect, Taylor & Francis online databases were used in the systematic literature review. As a result of the systematic literature review; it was revealed that affective factors such as anxiety, attitude, self-efficacy and motivation are individual variables that positively or negatively affect foreign language teaching and that they affect language input; in the context of teaching Turkish to foreigners, the studies on comprehension skills are insufficient in quantity, but according to the results of the studies, comprehension skills contribute to language teaching at least as much as cognitive skills.
