Self-care includes a series of actions such as exercising, eating healthy, developing social relationships, coping with stress, and realizing one’s personal potential to ensure that one’s body, mind, and emotions are in balance. This is a lifestyle in which a person makes a conscious effort and commitment to continuously support their own health and well-being, aiming to improve all aspects of their life. This review focuses on self-care and the effects of therapists undergoing their own psychotherapy processes, which is an important component of self-care, on their personal and professional development within the framework of ethical codes. In this context, the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, the Canadian Psychological Association’s Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists, the Canadian Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy’s Code of Ethics, the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations’ (EFPA) Meta-Code of Ethics, the International Union of Psychological Sciences’ Universal Declaration of Ethical Principles for Psychologists, and the Turkish Psychologists Association’s Ethics Codes were examined. It seems important for therapists to undergo their own psychotherapy processes regarding their professional competence and ethical responsibilities. Research has examined both the positive and negative effects of therapists’ therapy experiences. As a result, it is understood that psychology and clinical psychology programs should have content that emphasizes self-care as an ethical principle and practice, that research and practices that increase therapists’ self-care awareness should be developed, and that therapists can go through their own psychotherapy process as a way of self-care. It is also suggested that therapists going through their own psychotherapy processes can be accepted in principle within the framework of the responsibility they feel towards their profession.

Terapistin Öz-Bakımı ve Kendi Terapi Sürecinden Geçmesi: Etik Bakış Açısı ile Bir Derleme Çalışması

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 12 Sayı: 2, 190 - 210, 31.05.2025
https://doi.org/10.31682/ayna.1497617
