A proper name is one of the main concepts that defines a person and accompanies him/her from birth to death. The concept of the proper name has been the subject of several fields. Psychoanalytic  studies related to this topic have an important place among others in a clinical manner. According to Lacanian theory, a proper name is a signifier that defines a person and is bonded to him/her. In addition, it carries the name-giver’s own unconscious processes. In the current study, the concept of the proper name was examined in terms of participants’ naming processes, associations, and family relations. The results were discussed based on Lacanian theory. For this study, approximately one hour interviews were conducted with six university students whose ages ranged between
22 and 27, who have knowledge about their naming processes. Data were analyzed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Four main themes came up at the end of the analysis: “Me Name”, “Projecting What was Dreamed of”, “Showing One’s Position by Name”, and “Gaining Worth by Name”. All the themes except “Showing One’s Position by Name” were explained by the mirror stage, at which the child gets approval from Other, identifies with his/her own image and has a place in Other’s area. The theme of “Showing One’s Position by Name” was interpreted as enacting one’s effort to be separated via name as a signifier. To conclude, a proper name was considered as a signifier that a person carries like a label with his/her own image, and it functions as a means of repeating one’s main developmental concepts in his/her life.
