Van İli Edremit İlçesinde Yetiştirilen Bazı Ceviz Çeşitlerinin Performanslarının Belirlenmesi

Investigation of The Performances of Some Local and Foreign Walnut Varieties Grown In Van Edremit Region

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted in a producer orchard in Edremit district of Van province to evaluate the phenological and pomological characteristics of different local and foreign walnut cultivars. The research was carried out in 2023 in walnut orchard established in 2013 in Ayaspınar village, Edremit district, Van province, with a planting spacing of 7x7 meters. In the study, Kaman-1, Kaman-5, Ronde, Fernor and Chandler walnut varieties were evaluated. Evaluations were performed on nine trees from each cultivar whit three replications. Materials and Methods: Phenological traits were determined based on UPOV criteria, focusing on budburst, flowering (male and female), homogamy, and leaf fall dates. Pomological evaluations included measurements of fruit weight, kernel ratio, shell thickness, fruit dimensions (length, width, thickness), shell color, and kernel color. Diseases, pests, and frost damage were monitored across all trees. The experiment was designed according to a randomized complete block design. Results: Among the cultivars, leafing and flowering dates were the earliest in Kaman-1. The Kaman-5 cultivar stood out with the highest shell weight (17.44 g) and kernel weight (8.43 g), while Fernor had the lowest shell weight (12.67 g) and Chandler had the lowest kernel weight (5.01 g). In terms of fruit dimensions (length, width, and thickness), Kaman-5 recorded the highest values, whereas Fernor exhibited the lowest. Shell thickness was highest in Kaman-5 (2.21 mm) and lowest in Fernor (1.52 mm). Kernel ratio was found to be highest in Kaman-1 (52.52%) and lowest in Chandler (38.85%). Kernel shrinkage was highest in Kaman-5 (27.5%) and lowest in Fernor (12.75%). The highest empty fruit ratio was observed in Kaman-5 (10%), while the lowest was in Kaman-1 and Chandler (4%). Kernel decay was highest in Kaman-5 and Ronde de Montignac (12%) and lowest in Chandler (4%). Conclusion: Kaman-1 and Fernor cultivars exhibited superior performance compared to Kaman-5, Ronde de Montignac, and Chandler in the Edremit region of Van province.
