The Effect of Hazelnut Husk on Drought Resistance in the 'Hayward' Kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) Variety

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the potential and effectiveness of hazelnut husks in reducing drought stress in 'Hayward' kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) plants. Materials and Methods: In this study, drought stress was induced in 'Hayward' kiwi plants by subjecting them to four different water restriction levels (0%, 25%, 50% and 75%). Water restrictions were tested in standard peat-perlite (PP) and peat, perlite and hazelnut husk (HPP) supplemented media. After the experiment, the basic physiological parameters as well as shoot and leaf development parameters were analyzed in the plants. Results: The experiment concluded that drought stress severely negatively affected overall plant development. However, kiwis grown in hazelnut husk-enriched medium performed better than those grown in the standard peat-perlite medium. Accordingly, hazelnut husks successfully conserved relative water content, reduced cellular damage, and maintained total chlorophyll content, making it more successful than the standard growing medium. Conclusion: The addition of hazelnut husks to the growing medium acted as a buffer in plants under drought stress conditions, mitigating adverse conditions. This new approach is considered a potential sustainable strategy to increase plant resilience to water scarcity caused by climate change.
