Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of iron (Fe) applications on grain campesterol, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol concentrations on Yunus and Osmaniyem bread wheat cultivars in greenhouse conditions.
Materials and Methods: Iron applications were carried out in 1 and 5 mg kg-1 doses as the soil fertilizing and also 5 mg kg-1 Fe were sprayed to the leaves by using 0.2% FeSO4.7H2O in three different periods.
Results: According to the results, Fe application showed statistically significant (p<0.05) increases in grain Fe concentrations of both Yunus and Osmaniyem varieties. Compared to the control application, 34% Fe concentration increase occurred in the grains of Yunus and Osmaniyem varieties. Similar to this increase in concentration in grain, it has been observed that, with iron application, Yunus and Osmaniyem varieties increased statistically significantly (p<0.01 and p<0.05) in campesterol, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol concentrations. With increasing Fe concentration in the grain, 16% increase in campesterol concentration, 50% in stigmasterol concentration and 34.5% in beta-sitosterol concentration was observed in Yunus variety. It was revealed that Osmaniyem variety caused an increase in campesterol concentration by 21.8%, stigmasterol concentration by 17% and beta-sitosterol concentration by 36.5%.
Conclusion: The results showed that Fe applications were effective on the sterol concentrations of bread wheat varieties.
