Evaluation of Family Communication Styles with Virginia Satir’s Experiential Family Therapy Methods: The Example of the Movie "A Separation"

Öz

A Separation (2011), a film directed by Asghar Farhadi, is a drama production which takes place in Iran.The film focuses on the relationship between the divorced couple Simin and Nadir with their daughter Termeh, and observes the complexities and emotional hardness of relationships between family members. The film, which examines these relationships in depth, shares many common points with the concepts of experiential family therapy. At this point he effect of the dynamics between family members on individual communication styles is addressed with John Banmen’s adapted version of the family map, which is one of Virginia Satir’s intervention methods. It seems that studies addressing family structure with theoretical frame are limited in the literature. In this study, sample scenes selected from the film “A Separation” were examined through concepts similarly defined by Satir and Banmen who are experiential family therapists. Firstly, the origin family structure and iceberg metaphor and then, coping styles and communication styles were conceptually approached. In the last section, the conceptual framework in question was explained with concrete examples through family dynamics in the film in line with experiential family therapy methods. The selected sample scenes were evaluated with the basic concepts of experiential family therapy.How the family structure, identity and expectations of the characters affect their communication styles was explained by presenting a table. Understanding the dynamics within the family through these concepts is a guide for therapists working in the relevant field; it is aimed to contribute to the literature on family therapy with all aspects discussed.

Aile İçi İletişim Tarzlarının Virginia Satir’in Yaşantısal Aile Terapisi Metotlarıyla Değerlendirilmesi: “Bir Ayrılık” Filmi Örneği

Öz

Asghar Farhadi'nin Bir Ayrılık (2011) adlı filmi, İran'da geçen bir drama yapımıdır. Film, boşanma sürecindeki Simin ve Nadir çifti ile kızları Termeh’in ilişkilerine odaklanarak aile bireyleri arasındaki ilişkilerin karmaşıklığını ve duygusal zorluklarını ele almaktadır. Bu ilişkileri inceleyen film, yaşantısal aile terapisi kavramları ile birçok ortak noktaya sahiptir. Bu noktada Satir’in insan ilişkilerini anlamak ve iyileştirmek için geliştirdiği terapötik müdahale teknikleri, filmdeki dinamikleri kavramak için önemli bir çerçeve sunmaktadır. Aile bireyleri arasındaki dinamiklerin bireysel iletişim tarzlarına etkisi ise, Virginia Satir’in müdahale yöntemlerinden biri olan aile haritasının John Banmen’in uyarladığı versiyonu ile ele alınmıştır. Aile yapısını kuramsal çerçevelerle ele alan araştırmaların alanyazında sınırlı olduğu görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada “Bir Ayrılık” filminden seçilen örnek sahneler, Satir ve Banmen’in benzer şekilde tanımladıkları kavramlar üzerinden incelenmiştir. İlk olarak, köken aile yapısı ve buz dağı metaforu kavramsal olarak ele alınmıştır. Daha sonra Banmen’in başa çıkma tarzları, Satir’in ise iletişim tarzları olarak tanımladığı yaşamsal stratejiler incelenmiştir. Son bölümde ise filmdeki karakterlerin, temel alınan kavramsal çerçeve doğrultusunda analizleri yapılmıştır. Bahsedilen kavramsal çerçeve, yaşantısal aile terapisi metotlarıyla filmdeki aile dinamikleri üzerinden somut örneklerle açıklanmıştır. Seçilen örnek sahneler, kuramsal bilgiler ışığında belirlenmiş olup, karakterlerin etkileşimleri ve içsel deneyimleri yaşantısal aile terapisinin temel kavramlarıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Karakterlerin aile yapısı, kimliği ve beklentilerinin iletişim tarzlarını nasıl etkilediği tablo eşliğinde sunularak açıklanmıştır. Bu kavramlar aracılığıyla aile içindeki dinamiklerin anlamlandırılması, ilgili alanda çalışan terapistlere rehber niteliğinde olup; ele alınan tüm yönleriyle aile terapisi ile ilgili alanyazına katkı sağlaması hedeflenmektedir.
