Fruit Morphology of Potamogeton L. (Pondweed) Species Distributed in Türkiye

Öz

This study investigates fruit morphology in Potamogeton species distributed in Türkiye and aims to determine the taxonomic diagnostic value of fruit-related characters. Within the scope of the study, fruit length, fruit width, length/width ratio, beak length, and length/beak length ratio were measured from a total of 527 mature fruits belonging to 13 species. In addition, dentation patterns on the dorsal and ventral margins and beak orientation were categorized and included in the statistical analyses. The data were evaluated using UPGMA clustering analysis based on Gower distance and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA showed that the first three components explained 89.14% of the total variance. Beak morphology, marginal dentation, and fruit size were identified as useful characters for distinguishing Potamogeton species. Our findings indicate that fruit morphology in Potamogeton is not only taxonomically informative but also represents an important set of characters that should be reconsidered in phylogenetic and functional contexts.

Türkiye’de Yayılış Gösteren Susümbülü (Potamogeton L.) Türlerinin Meyve Morfolojisi

Öz

Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de yayılış gösteren Potamogeton L. (Susümbülü) türlerinin meyve morfolojisini incelemekte ve meyveye ilişkin karakterlerin taksonomik açıdan ayırt edici değerini belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında 13 türe ait yaklaşık 510 olgun meyvenin boy, en, boy/en oranı, gaga uzunluğu, boy/gaga uzunluğu, dorsal ve ventral kenarlardaki diş yapıları ile gaga duruş biçimlerine ait morfolojik ölçüm ve değerlendirmeler istatistiksel analizlere dahil edilmiştir. Veriler, Gower uzaklığına dayalı UPGMA kümeleme analizi ve Temel Bileşenler Analizi (PCA) ile değerlendirilmiştir. PCA analizi sonucunda, ilk üç bileşen toplam varyansın %89,14’ünü açıklamıştır. Gaga morfolojisi, kenar dişliliği ve meyve boyutu Potamogeton türlerini birbirinden ayırmada kullanılabilecek en kullanışlı karakterler olarak belirlenmiştir. Bulgularımız bu cinste meyve morfolojisinin yalnızca tanısal değil, aynı zamanda filogenetik ve fonksiyonel açıdan da yeniden değerlendirilmesi gereken önemli bir karakter olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
